The portable computer market is getting more confusing as companies have begun transcending the traditional barriers of "computer categories." Traditionally, computers fell into either the "desktop" or "notebook" category. Nowadays, there are smart phones, tablets, notebooks and desktop computers. Each of these technological devices fulfills a role with the main debate ranging from power vs. portability. Here's a small breakdown of the two most common portable options; the notebook and the tablet.
Notebook
Notebooks are slimmed down desktop computers, which are made to be portable. They contain a built-in keyboard and contain most of the computer hardware as a desktop computer, but aren't as powerful as a desktop computer. The notebook computer market contains numerous models with varying functions, making it easy to find one that fits both your needs and your budget. From a computing standpoint, a notebook is more versatile than a tablet for computing tasks, but is not as portable. There are also many "netbooks", which are very similar to a traditional notebook, but come with a smaller LCD screen (7 to 9-inches) and a specialized processor (Intel Atom). The saturation of the notebook computer market means you can find many that are well within you computer budget.
Convertible Tablet Notebook
Tablet
Most tablets come in two different forms; the convertible model that typically has a pullout keyboard for word-processing/email and the slate model, which has a virtual keyboard on the screen and is flat. Tablets are often used for ebooks, light Internet browsing, email, some video games and displaying digital photographs. They are smaller than notebook computers, but contain a less powerful processor and have smaller capacity hard drives. They often do not contain a dedicated graphics card or a CD disk drive (although few contain a CD drive). Prices for tablets are relatively similar to the lower end notebook computers. The real draw for this type of computer is its portability.
Final Thoughts
In the end, either computer will satisfy most Internet needs, so it comes down to how much computer processing power you will need and how portable a system you need.
